The decarbonization of the maritime industry requires alternative fuel choices and new innovative onboard technologies. The Mærsk McKinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has established a joint industry project approach in collaboration with a range of industry-leading partners across the supply chain. The ambition is to investigate and develop future design options for environmental ships, including zero or low-emission fuels, storage systems, power solutions, and energy efficiency means.

The Opportunity

To support this acceleration and ambition we are currently seeking an ambitious and talented Ship Design Manager. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, then keep on reading.

Within the Center, the Ship Design Manager will be responsible for, and project manage a key portfolio of R&D and feasibility projects with our partners, spanning from new vessel concept designs to retrofit packages of existing vessels on water. The role will be instrumental in delivering on the Center Fleet Transition impact hub and R&D strategy and providing input to the maritime decarbonization strategy including economic analysis and technical feasibility. The successful candidate has a keen interest for detailed project management, innovation and R&D in the maritime world but also very accustomed to customer focus acumen.

The role is a permanent, full-time position offered under local employment terms, with the majority of work conducted onsite at our Copenhagen office. While relocation support is not provided, we offer assistance with the work visa process.

 

What You’ll Do

 Your tasks and responsibilities will include: 

  • Managing innovative ship design and development projects
  • Develop from ideation all the way to execution of new concept designs
  • Develop from ideation all the way to execution of retrofit designs for existing vessels.
  • Supporting the Fleet Transition impact hub team and leadership with R&D portfolio prioritization of technologies and design of low and zero emission fuel solutions
  • Playing a strategic role in identifying and analyzing de-risking technology choices for future asset strategies in collaboration with the Ship Technology Team.
  • Supporting and collaborating with partners and scoping projects. Leveraging know-how, resources, and management of secondees and projects
  • Manage and develop secondees competences and leadership skills.
  • Technical and economic analysis to contribute to qualifying the Center’s Techno-Economic model
  • Delivering qualified results on complex and innovative R&D and feasibility projects, with key input to the fleet transition impact hub objectives and Centre’s strategy.
  • Delivering professional and structured project execution and reporting outputs
  • Contributing to funding application processes
  • Ability to work on a wide range of stakeholders from collaborating with academia to develop academic papers to aligning partners with a design study that will be executed in real life through a relevant funding application.

 

Who Are You?

To fill this position we seek a person with a “can-do” attitude and a willingness to do what it takes in a scale-up environment. To succeed in this role, you will need to be a strategic thinker with a collaborative mindset. Furthermore, you will need to be confident and able to challenge and influence the Center’s leadership team and thrive in a fast-moving and undefined solution space collaborating with many stakeholders. You will need to have the “customer first” acumen, and be able to analyze the challenges of our partners while translating them to actionable projects that are linked to the Centre’s strategy and our impact hub objectives.

Candidates with diverse backgrounds will be taken into consideration. However, the following competencies are on our wish list:

  • A great collaborator, with proven track record of achieving project results by breaking barriers across departments and disciplines.
  • M.Sc. or Ph.D (preferably). Degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering
  • Ability and track record of able to work on an environment of high ambiguity.
  • Project management experience from new building and ship design
  • Competencies within portfolio, project, and data management
  • Excellent ability to process and structure information and plans
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • A solid track record with new building and retrofit projects from ship design office, shipyard and/or ship owner
  • A great understanding of the marine sector ecosystem and environmental regulations
  • Insight in zero emission fuels and system technologies and energy efficiency solutions
  • A proven track record of leading specialists in an international stakeholder environment in a project-based organization
