Thus, the employer obligations will remain with your home employer including payment of all compensation, salaries, remuneration and costs owed to you as an employee, as well as any social or employment related taxes and all associated costs and expenses.

OVERVIEW

This is a fantastic opportunity for a legally trained professional to contribute to the global decarbonization of shipping. As a secondee at the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, you will apply your legal expertise to support regulatory coherence and innovation across a range of projects. You’ll be part of a mission-driven organisation working at the intersection of law, policy, and sustainability.
 

ORGANIZATION AND TEAM

You will join the Regulation & Policy Impact Hub, a dynamic and cross-functional team that works to shape the regulatory landscape for zero-carbon shipping. The team collaborates closely with internal experts and external stakeholders, to develop actionable insights and influence global maritime regulation. You’ll be embedded in a collaborative environment that values curiosity, rigour, and impact.

PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Provide legal input on enforcement mechanisms and compliance structures across regulatory projects.
  • Identify ambiguities or inconsistencies in IMO texts and proposals, and propose clarifications or amendments.
  • Draft legal position papers, briefs, and contributions for IMO submissions and working groups.
  • Track developments in IMO legal instruments and flag emerging legal trends relevant to the Center’s work.
  • Interpret IMO regulatory texts (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM Code) and provide internal guidance to project teams.
  • Translate complex regulatory language into actionable insights for non-legal colleagues.
  • Support cross-hub collaboration by embedding legal perspectives into strategic initiatives.
  • Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing and capacity-building on legal and regulatory topics.

 CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCES NEEDED
  • A degree in law (LL.B or equivalent); specialisation in maritime or international law is a plus.
  • Experience in legal or regulatory affairs, ideally including exposure to shipping or IMO processes.
  • Familiarity with key IMO instruments such as MARPOL, SOLAS, and the ISM Code.
  • Understanding of international regulatory frameworks and enforcement mechanisms.
  • Ability to draft legal documents, position papers, and policy briefs with clarity and precision.
  • Competence in translating legal language into practical guidance for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Awareness of emerging legal trends in maritime regulation and climate governance.
  • Fluency in English; additional languages are a plus but not required.
